Reigate 1XV make it a clean dozen victories on the year with good January results

We’ve played some great attacking rugby this month and defended well, scoring 98 points to just 21 conceded
- Matt Sanford, Head Coach

Reigate Rugby Club picked up in January where they left off 2023, extending their winning run to 12 games on the bounce with another 3 victories in Surrey 5.

Opening their account against Wandsworthians in impressive style, Reigate were 58-0 victors with a tally of 10 tries – including a hat-trick for the impressive Winger Mitchell Siciliano who is thriving in his first season of senior rugby having stepped up from Reigate’s Youth side this year.

Following a walk-over in the first arranged meeting between Reigate and London French, the league leaders welcomed London French to Colley Lane. Third place French – who had not yet been beaten on the pitch this year – presented a formidable opponent in nippy conditions, however it was the home side who emerged the victors in a close 13-8 affair with tries for Fly-half Callum Mackenzie and Number 8 Sean Murrough.

Lastly, a rotated Reigate squad played hosts once more for their final January game – beating a physical Woking outfit 27-13. Tries from Siciliano, Murrough, Locks James Bennett and Phil Miller as well as another product of the Youth setup Adam Gatland helped secure the victory.

Head Coach Matt Sanford praised his players but noted the need for caution, stating “as a coaching team we’re really pleased with the way the lads have come out of the Christmas break raring to go, but we know that we’ve got two good teams hot on our tail. It’s good to see the whole squad focussing on just the next game and not getting complacent. That said, we’ve played some great attacking rugby this month and defended well, scoring 98 points to just 21 conceded.”

Reigate are next in action away to Egham Hollowegians Saturday 3rd February, before returning back to Colley Lane to face current 2nd place holders Raynes Park on 17th February.
