Reigate win 2026 Walking Rugby Tournament

Match report by R Perkins
02 May 2026

The latest installment of the "slightly feral barn cats" & another collaboration between Reigate RFC & Old Reigatians RFC.

A fine assortment of players across both clubs descended upon Burgess Hill rugby club (in the usual fashion) to take part in the yearly event of the Burgess Hill Walking Rugby Tournament. The format of the tournament would be to play three group games, a semi final & a final.

Our group would include

  • Wimbledon
  • Seaford
  • Burgess Hill Adders

The Reigate All Stars won all three group games to progress through to the cup semi final.
This was to be played against Guildfordians.

A very tight match between two very capable sides. Both teams pressing to generate space and moving the ball around the park, playing some very entertaining rugby, stalwart defence and creative attack from both teams. The Reigate all Stars eventually running (walking) out victors.

On to the final...........

The final was to be played against the Burgess Hill Panthers. A very disciplined & efficient side with and without the ball. Great defence from the Reigate all Stars kept us in the game and with 10 seconds on the clock and a score down the Reigate all Stars stuck with their Rugby DNA and moved the ball from one side of the pitch to the other culminating in a well worked try and equalling the tie.

Match drawn?

Both sides agreed with the referee to play "1st try wins" and envoke the "Golden Try". There was really nothing between the two sides. Either teams could have won. With the Reigate all Stars gaining possession, the ball again moved from one side of the pitch to the other quickly, a gap, a defender drawn, and our player on the wing released into score at the far corner.

Victory!

As usual a very well run tournament and we thank our hosts Burgess Hill for having us along with all the teams we had the pleasure to meet either playing against, or just enjoying the beautiful spring sunshine with!

Some take aways from the tournament

  • The quality of Rugby is improving year on year, it is great to see the game improve and new teams arrive on the "scene" long may this continue.
  • Thanks to all of the teams that allowed us to borrow players so that we could participate.
  • Thanks to Gavin for his logistical support. Steve for his sustenance. Mike for his communication and willingness to keep us on the straight and narrow. Thank you all for your effort and attendance.
  • A special thanks go to the players who decided to not take part in the final. Not all of us could play and your selfless decisions are a testament to the game we fortunately still have the opportunity play & the very essence of "team".

And as if the day couldn't get any better?
My skipper Hamish should appear and support the team. I hope we done the job for you skipper!
