Colley Lane, Reigate – 20 December
On paper, this fixture looked like a straightforward afternoon for league leaders Cranleigh, who arrived at Colley Lane expecting to impose themselves on a Reigate side sitting third from bottom. What unfolded, however, was a far more competitive and compelling contest than many had anticipated.
Reigate started with real intent and intensity, immediately taking the game to their illustrious opponents. Strong work at the breakdown and a disciplined defensive line allowed the home side to pin Cranleigh deep inside their own half for long periods of the opening spell. That pressure told on the scoreboard, with Reigate winning three penalties and converting all three to take a deserved 9–0 lead into half-time.
Cranleigh, clearly frustrated by their below-par first-half performance, emerged after the break with renewed purpose following what was reported to be a stern dressing-room response. The away side raised their tempo, improved their physicality at contact and began to stretch the Reigate defence.
As the second half wore on, Cranleigh turned to their bench to inject fresh legs and energy. The impact was immediate. With quicker ball and sharper support play, the league leaders started to move the ball wide, exploiting tired defenders and forcing gaps to appear. Three quick tries followed in succession, swinging the momentum decisively in Cranleigh’s favour and ultimately putting the result beyond doubt.
While the final outcome aligned with pre-match expectations, the manner of the contest certainly did not. Reigate can take significant pride from their first-half performance, which showcased resilience, organisation and a refusal to be overawed by the league’s top side.
In the end, Cranleigh’s quality and depth proved decisive, but this was far from the thrashing many had predicted. Credit must go to Reigate for their grit and determination, qualities that, if repeated, will stand them in good stead for the remainder of the season.
We hope all our members and supporters have a wonderful christmas and look forward to seeing you in the new year.
